JVM sets up game for future

JVM sets up game for future

First it fielded its candidate against the Congress in the countermanded Rajya Sabha poll and then waited till the last moment for it to agree to its own terms before finally abstaining from the May 3 election. The Jharkhand Vikas Morcha (JVM) is eyeing centre stage. The party is clear in its mind to encash the trust of the electorates and to prove relevance in turbulent Jharkhand politics.

Understanding within the party suggests that the JVM is focused on State politics and any give and take would be done around this goal. The decision to not vote in the Rajya Sabha poll should be seen in this context itself.

“It (abstaining) was not against parliamentary democracy but like right to reject. We put certain demands before the Congress and they declined. What was the point in supporting their candidate when we have to walk alone? We are not going to carry palki of the Congress any longer,” said party general secretary Praveen Singh.

JVM chief Babulal Marandi has on many occasions spoken publicly that the party would field candidates on all the 81 Assembly and 14 Lok Sabha seats in the future.

The clarity has virtually slammed the door on the Congress shunning any chance of pre-poll alliance. In these circumstances, party leaders think, there is no point in conceding to the Congress demands and that also without getting anything in immediate return.

“We had agreed to negotiate with the Congress with so many ideas. They duped us on many occasions and were non-committal on any of our demands. When we have not to enter into any deal with the Congress during the Assembly polls then why to stretch the relationship,” asked a senior leader of the party saying that chances of its candidate winning the upcoming Hatia constituency election are bright even without the Congress.

Observers within the party think that the future course of action is to walk alone. Surfing on the tide of ‘cleaner image’ of Marandi and resentment among the electorates against coalition politics, the party is confident of a good show during the next Assembly elections.

“We will be contesting on all the seats and confident of securing considerable numbers. If need be, any post-poll alliance would emerge depending on the situation. In that case, the Congress and others would need us more,” said Praveen Singh.

Any kind of reconciliation from the Congress to salvage the alliance is not coming either. Cabinet Minister Subodh Kant Sahay reminded Marandi his past association with rightwing Rashtriya Swayamsevak Sangh and saw him wearing ‘half-pant’ under dhoti after stubborn JVM decided not to participate in the May 3 poll.

“Their demands are unending and impractical and we are not going to concede those. You can say the alliance is over,” said senior Congress leader Sarfaraz Ahmed, sealing the fate of the bonhomie.
