Ten more convicted for Ode riots
In yet another verdict of the post-Godhra riot cases, ten people have been convicted for burning alive three minorities in Ode village of Anand district on March 1, 2002.
Special Court judge RM Sareen has sentenced nine of the ten to life imprisonment on charges of murder, criminal conspiracy and rioting while another has been awarded six months’ imprisonment for causing hurt to the victims.
Fines of Rs 21,500 each were imposed on the nine sentenced for life while the one convicted for six months has been fined Rs 500.
As many as 17 accused were acquitted as they were not found to be involved in the murder while 13 others were given the benefit of doubt.
This was the third and last judgement in the post-Godhra riots cases in Ode village of Anand district in central Gujarat. On Mar 1, 2002, mobs vowing to avenge the killings of 58 kar sewaks in the Godhra train fire had burnt to death three minorities, including a woman, in the Malav Bhagol locality of Ode village. Of the 45 original accused, six are absconding, probably fled the country, while one died during the ten-year-old trial.
In the other verdict last week in the case of burning to death of 23 minorities inside a house, a Special Court had convicted 23 people while 23 others were acquitted. During the decade-long trial, 67 witnesses were examined by the Special Court. Prosecutiion had demanded capital punishment for the nine convicted people but the Speciel Court rejected the demand.
