Police teams fan out to catch offenders

Police teams fan out to catch offenders

Following the Supreme Court’s ban on dark films on car windows, the Delhi Traffic Police on Friday launched a sustained drive against the offenders.

Although 50 teams of traffic constables were deployed at several areas across the Capital, not all of them showed cognizance to the modified rules. In case a car was caught with tinted glasses, the owner was issued on the spot penalty of `100 and the dark films were removed from his window panes. But if the owner resisted his/her vehicle had to be impounded, which was not done at Siri Fort. The constables followed the earlier method of depositing the driving licence and Registration Card of the owner and asked the violator to report to the area officer within 72 hours time after removing the tinted film.

“We want to emphasise that use of dark films on cars of kind is prohibited and Delhiites should learn to live without them. A total of 4,915 vehicles were prosecuted by the evening of May 4,” said Joint Commissioner of Police, Satyendra Garg. While briefing about the break-up of the prosecution, he said told the numbers included 4,868 cars, 45 taxis and two RTVs.

Southern Range topped the list of offenders with 1,371 prosecutions, followed by 1,162 in the Central Range, 942 in the Northern Range, 930 in the Western Range and 510 in Eastern Range. “Only car windows having company fitted tints were not prosecuted. Since the ban came due to the rising criminal incidents such as rape, any other obstruction in identifying the occupants of the car such as mats and curtains is also illegal. People cannot plead ignorance and the VVIPs and VIPs exempted from the ban will have to produce requisite documents issued by the Delhi Government,” said Garg. However, he said that the agency is hopeful that it will not need to continue the drive after a couple of days as by that time, people will be aware of the rule.
