The Supreme Court’s ban on tinted films has come as a windfall for the hundreds of car accessories shops in the Capital, who are making a fast buck just to remove the films from the window screens. Exploiting the gravity of the situation, the charges to peel off the dark films from a car hovered between Rs200 to Rs600, depending upon the vehicle’s size.

The same process used to cost Rs100 or was non-chargeable three days back.

At Lajpat Nagar market, the scores of car accessories shops were seen raking in the moolah on Friday, when the SC’s ban on tinted films came into effect. Scores of anxious vehicle owners walked into these shops to get rid of the tinted films from their cars. Word of mouth created on Delhi Police granting no mercy on issuing on the spot challans, forced people to head for these shops. Vehicle owners complained that first they had to pay a hefty sum to get the films and now with the ban coming into effect, they were compelled to shell out for the removal of the films. “I paid Rs2,000 to get UV protecting dark films on my car windows. I am now charged Rs500 to get them removed,” whined Kamal Khanna, a BMW owner.

The shopkeepers justified the overnight revision in rates as a result of the labour that is put into the entire process, which not just requires the removal of the tinted film, but also wiping off the gum stains that it leaves behind. “The rates for removal of dark films have been fixed as per the vehicle’s size as big cars require more effort. We have been getting a lot of customers since Thursday morning, and the trend continued on Friday as well,” said Suresh, a worker at the Panchshila service station. The rates were not ubiquitous and shops charged as per their will, harassing the people. Each shop received 20 customers on an average for the removal of dark films from their window panes within three hours of the first day the SC’s ban came into effect.
