Another married woman jumps to death from Metro station
Less than 24 hours after a woman harassed for dowry jumped to death from a Metro station in Gurgaon, another married woman committed suicide by jumping from a Metro station in Delhi on Friday afternoon.
Aarti (27), who was allegedly depressed over some marital issue, jumped to death from Kirti Nagar metro station in West Delhi.
Additional Deputy Commissioner of Police, Railways, BS Gujjar said, the incident was reported from Kirti Nagar Metro station at 12:30 pm on Friday. The woman identified as Aarti jumped off from the intersection platform at the Metro station. The victim, mother of 15-month-old child, was rushed to the Deen Dayal Upadhyay hospital where she succumbed to her injuries.
She was apparently distressed over dowry demand by her in-laws. According to eyewitnesses, she entered the Metro station and suddenly jumped on the road. No suicide note was recovered from the spot, added the officer.
She stayed at the Delhi Development Authority (DDA) flat in Madipur in west Delhi’s Punjabi Bagh area along with her in-laws family. “She got married with Anil Yadav, who works with Indian Air Force and is posted in Delhi’s Cantonment area as a warrant officer, two-and-half year ago,” said BS Gujjar, Additional Deputy Commissioner of Police, Railway.
Her father Ratan Singh registered a complaint with police that her daughter was being harassed by her in-laws for dowry that led her to commit suicide. Since the woman died within seven years of her marriage, an SDM enquiry in the incident has been initiated, said a senior police official.
The incident occurred a day after a 25-year-old woman employee working with HDFC bank committed suicide by jumping from the terrace of MG Road Metro station in Gurgaon after being anguished over her in-laws harassment for dowry. The back-to-back incidents are evidence of the fact that the trend of dowry is fast catching up with the urban population.
