Raids to check black marketing of LPG cylinders
The Delhi Government has launched a crackdown on LPG gas agencies and bottling plants in the Capital to check black marketing and siphoning of gas from cylinders.
The Weights and Measures Department of the Government has seized 245 cylinders after conducting 455 raids and 159 prosecutions since February till date. According to the data provided by the Government, eight FIRs have been registered regarding black marketing, misuse, illegal possession and storage of LPG cylinders. Delhi Minister of Food and Civic supplies Haroon Yusuf said a special drive was launched after the Government received numerous complaints and it will be continued to prevent harassment of consumers in the hands of black-marketeers.
Speaking at a press conference, Yusuf said that strong action would be taken against the defaulting agencies. He said that defaulters as well as associated companies would be penalised heavily if found guilty, with fines going up to
`10,000 and a possible jail term. The Minister said the department is conducting regular inspections throughout Delhi to curb illegal practices and to ensure that provisions of Legal Metrology Act are not flouted.
The suppliers include Indian Oil Corporation, Bharat Petroleum, Hindustan Petroleum etc. There are 279 gas agencies in the city that belong to IOC, BPCL and HPCL. Giving details about the drive, Yusuf informed that the Government has set up helpline number, 011-23379266, to enable consumers to make complaints. Yusuf said: “The Department of Food and Supply/ Weight and Measures has been receiving complaints pertaining to short supply of LPG by suppliers. We are also receiving complaints regarding non-supply of LPG by various suppliers due to black marketing of domestic cylinders.”
