J&K employees’ march to Raj Bhavan foiled

J&K employees’ march to Raj Bhavan foiled

Police on Saturday foiled an attempt by Government employees to march towards Raj Bhavan even as the Government offices and State-run schools wore a deserted look on the third day of the general strike called by the employees to protest against rulers’ alleged apathy towards them.

The police have detained most of the employees’ leaders in a crackdown and foiled their attempted to assemble or stage protest demonstrations.

The Civil Secretariat that observes two weekend holidays was closed on Saturday but the other offices throughout the Valley remained closed. The employees are demanding payments of arrears of 6th Pay Commission, regularisation of daily wagers and those appointed on contractual or ad hoc basis besides enhancement of retirement age from existing 58 to 60 years.

The Government says that it was ready to hold talks with the employees to explore workable solutions. However, the employee leaders allege that the Government entered into agreement with the employee unions but reneged at the time of implementation.

“We would not be cowed down by the tactics of the Government”, Abdul Qayoom Wani, a prominent trade union member said.

The employees earlier observed two day strike on May 8 and 9, shortly after the Government offices reopened in summer capital following biennial shifting of durbar from Jammu. The Opposition People’s Democratic Party, CPI (M) and separatist Hurriyat Conference’s both factions have supported the employees stir.
