BJD, 5 other parties call Odisha bandh on May 31

Coinciding the BJP-led National Democratic Alliance’s bandh call, six non-Congress political parties including the ruling Biju Janata Dal (BJD) called dawn-to-dusk Odisha bandh on May 31 protesting the first-ever steep hike in petrol price. The other parties are — the CPI, the CPI(M), the Forward Bloc, the Rashtriya Janata Dal and the Samajwadi Party.

The decision to organise Odisha bandh was taken by the BJD at an emergent meeting held under the chairmanship of senior party vice-president and Finance Minister Prafulla Chandra Ghadai in the absence of party supremo Naveen Patnaik, a day after the youth wing of the party organised a demonstration before the Raj Bhawan demanding rollback of the petrol price hike.

Later, talking to newsmen Ghadai said the party has appealed to the people of the State and other like-minded parties to support the bandh, called against the anti-people decision of the UPA Government. During the bandh period, shops and other official establishments would remain closed and vehicular traffic including train services would not be allowed to run. However, essential services like hospital and ambulance services would be allowed during the bandh period, he said.

Demanding the Central Government to intervene in the matter, he urged the Centre to consider waiving the taxes on petrol so that people can get petrol on affordable price.
