Warden making girl lick urine gets bail
A Birbhum court on Monday granted bail to Uma Das, a hostel warden who allegedly forced a Class V student to lick up her own urine but not before reprimanding police authorities for handling the case in a “cavalier manner.” The court also directed the school authorities to pay for the treatment of the girl and realise the amount from the salary of the erring teacher.
The incident happened in Karabi Hostel of Patha Bhavan School in Shantiniketan.
During her daily inspection, the warden found on Saturday night that the girl had wet her bed. She immediately summoned up a “desi totka,” asking another student to fetch some salt. “She woke little Sumana (name changed) up and asked another girl to fetch some salt,” an inmate said adding that the teacher then asked Suman to put the salt on the bedsheet where she had urinated. “Then she was asked to lick that part.”
A horrified Sumana fell ill at once and started vomiting. “Then I called up my parents who rushed in to take me away but the hostel authorities did not allow them to do so, leading to a heated exchange” the traumatised student said, adding she was still unwell and would not go to Shantiniketan again as a boarder.
“I will go to school only as a day-scholar,” she said, wondering when her parents would return. Following the altercation with Sumana’s father on Saturday night, the hostel authorities lodged a complaint with the police who promptly arrested her parents.
Later, even as the news spread like wildfire and a counter-complaint filed by the victim’s parents, the hostel warden was arrested. Upon interrogation, the teacher who was on the verge of retirement, reportedly told the police that her intention was not malafide as she had known of similar cases getting cured by adopting the method she had applied.
Even as the Vishwa-Bharati University of which Shantiniketan is a constituent appointed a four-member fact-finding committee the Court reprimanded the police for slapping lighter charges in the case.
PMO seeks report
The Prime Minister Office(PMO) on Monday sought a report in the incident of a class 5 student of West Bengal’s Visva-Bharati university school being allegedly forced to drink her own urine as a punishment for bedwetting. “PMO has sought a report through the Human Resource Development Ministry,” a PMO official said.
NCPCR tells Bengal to probe matter
The National Commission for Protection of Child Rights (NCPCR) has taken cognizance of a ten-year-old girl allegedly being forced to drink her own urine by the hostel warden in Vishwa Bharati.
It has issued a show cause notice to the West Bengal Government, directing it to investigate the incident involving the fifth class student of Patha Bhavan and submit a report to it within ten days. In a letter to the Secretary, School Education of West Bengal, the commission has asked him to take further necessary action with regard to the incident.
The National Commission for Protection of Child Rights said that the report should have details of alleged victimisation and punishment accorded to the student by the hostel warden for bedwetting.
It should also provide qualification and training imparted to the hostel warden.
The report should also suggest necessary actions against the warden and other functionaries, if found guilty, and ensure that the child gets immediate counseling at the cost of the state.
NCPCR chairperson Shanta Sinha has expressed anguish and concern over the insensitivity shown to the child and demanded penal action against for warden.
She also stressed the need to impart proper training and sensitization of teachers and wardens to avoid such violation of human rights of children.
