Mantralaya inferno singes State Govt in both Houses
The BJP-led Opposition disrupted proceedings and forced noisy adjournments in both the Houses of the Maharashtra Legislature on the first day of the Monsoon Session with a vehement demand for a comprehensive debate on the June 21 Mantralaya inferno.
The protests by the three major Opposition parties, BJP, Shiv Sena and MNS, against the “corrupt” and “ineffective” Congress-led DF Government - witnessed at the Vidhan Bhavan’s main entrance before the start of the session - spilled into both the Houses, where the Opposition members jointly demanded a full-fledged debate on the Mantralaya fire.
Setting an aggressive tone for the Monsoon Session, leader of the Opposition in the Assembly Eknath Khadse sought to move an adjournment motion, seeking the suspension of the question hour to facilitate a debate under House rule 97, on the Mantralaya fire -- in which five persons were killed, 15 others injured and three-upper floors and the make-shift offices on the terrace of the six-storey state secretariat building were gutted.
Stressing on the need for an immediate debate on the Manatralaya blaze, Khadse said that the state government should come clean on whether the June 21 fire was a “mishap” or a “sabotage” as was being suspected in many quarters.
However, Speaker Dilip Walse Patil rejected the Opposition’s demand. This prompted the Opposition members to raise vociferous slogans against the DF government.
Amid the chaotic scenes, the Speaker adjourned the House for an hour till noon and called the various group leaders for a discussion in his Chamber.
Even after the House re-assembled, the Opposition continued to raise slogans against the state government on the fire, Adarsh scam and other issues. They demanded a statement from chief minister Prithviraj Chavan on the Mantralaya inferno.
