    BJP romps home, Congbites dust

It was a severe jolt to Madhya Pradesh unit of Congress on Monday, as it lost 24 out of the 27 municipalities that went to the polls on July 5. It lost the election even in the home town of State Congress president Kantilal Bhuria.

Twenty posts of chairperson in as many municipalities were won by the ruling Bharatiya Janata Party (BJP). The Congress won three while the Independents emerged victorious at four places.

BJP candidate Dhan Singh Baria defeated his nearest Congress rival by nearly 3,500 votes in the contest for the post of municipality chairperson in Jhabua. In the election for 18 councillors in Jhabua, the BJP bagged 11 while the Congress won three and the Independents four. Bhuria's prestige was at stake in these polls.

According to reports, the BJP has triumphed at most places in the tribal-dominated regions of the state. Buoyed by the results, Chief Minister Shivraj Singh Chouhan and Madhya Pradesh BJP president Prabhat Jha celebrated their success at the state party headquarters in the presence of party office-bearers and workers.

Both Chouhan and Jha were the star campaigners for the BJP in the elections.

Recently, the BJP had won the by-election to Khargone's Maheshwar assembly constituency, wresting the seat from the Congress.

Polls had been held for 49 civic bodies in 15 tribal-dominated districts in two phases. Poll results for over two dozen places were announced on Monday, while the rest would be declared on Wednesday.

The results at other places were also overwhelming for the BJP. From Seoni, Independent candidate Sudha Rai emerged victorious in the election to the Lakhnadaun nagar panchayat defeating her nearest BJP candidate Kaushalya Ukas. Seoni is the home town of state BJP Mahila Morcha president Nita Pateria.

The Congress candidate had suddenly withdrawn his name for this election even without informing the party, triggering various kinds of speculations. In Sheopur, Bahujan Samaj Party (BSP) candidate Harinarayan Kushwaha won the post of chairperson of the Vijaynagar nagar panchayat by defeating his nearest Congress rival.
