    Fishermen’s Day to be observed today

    Fishermen’s Welfare and Fisheries Development department is organising Fishermen’s Day at Ravindra Bhavan, Bhopal at 11 am on July 10.

    Fishermen’s Welfare and Fisheries Development Minister will honour fishermen, fish breeders and producers of fish seeds on the basis of their excellent performances. During the function, progressive farmers who made remarkable achievements will interact with other fishermen. Besides, they will be acquainted with various schemes being implemented in the State for the development of fisheries. This effort will prove important to help fishermen in fish breeding fish and producing fish seeds.

    Several fisheries development schemes are being implemented with special attention in Madhya Pradesh. These include National Mission for Protein Supplement, collective fish breeding, cage culture in large reservoirs, developing augmentation ponds on private land for production of fish seeds, construction of peripheral tanks and pans in reservoirs, augmentation ponds near large reservoirs, landing centre at reservoirs to enable fishermen to get proper prices, fish sale centres in small and medium cities etc.

    Besides, credit cards have been made available for fishermen to get loans for fishing/fish breeding. Schemes under Fish Farmers’ Development Agency and National Mission for Protein Supplement are also being implemented in the State. Fishermen have been covered under accident insurance to provide them social security. Housing scheme for them is also under implementation.

    Notably, 3.729 lakh hectare water sector area is available in Madhya Pradesh of which 3.096 hectares are in the form of irrigation reservoirs and 0.63 in the form of rural lakes and ponds. Besides, 17,088 kilometer long rivers and their tributaries also flow in the State. These water bodies have rich wealth of fish. As per Zoological Survey of India, 215 varieties of fish have been identified in Madhya Pradesh.
