    Kanwar fair culminates with jalabhishek

    The 15-day Kanwar mela culminated on Tuesday with lakhs of devotees performing jalabhishek of Lord Shiva on the occasion of Shiv Chaudas, also known as the Shivratri of the Shrawan month.

    Amid tight security, the day was celebrated with full splendour and religious fervours. Lakhs of devotees were seen thronging Lord Shiva temples in the city the entire day.

    According to senior officials, more than 1.5 lakh devotees were in the city to celebrate the Hindu festival here. Meanwhile, no untoward incident was reported till the last reports came in and the festival passed off peacefully.

    Thousands of devotees from different parts of the country had flocked Har-Ki-Pauri since wee hours on Tuesday to take a holy dip in Ganga. Long queues of devotees were also seen outside the famous Daksh Prajapati, Bilvkeshwar Mahadev, Daridra Bhanjan and Nileshwar Mahadev temples in the city with devotees carrying religious offerings to worship Lord Shiva. Meanwhile the devotees, who were fasting on the day, had thronged the temples to pay obeisance to the deities there.

    Haridwar District Magistrate, Sachin Kurve said that more than 1.5 lakh people were in the city on Tuesday to celebrate the festival here. “The police had stepped up security across the city, particularly in Har-Ki-Pauri and near other Shiva temples in the city. The day passed off peacefully.”

    Meanwhile security was tight in and around all the Lord Shiva temples in the city and Har-Ki-Pauri, where celebrations were taking place in full splendour. Additional police forces were provided to check traffic snarls in the city. “Nearly 1,000 police personnel, along with sniffer dog squads and mounted police were put on special duty since Monday night. We had installed CCTV cameras in all strategically important places in and around Har-Ki-Pauri and important temples in the city,” Superintendent of Police (Haridwar city) KL Shah, said.
