Diggy cut down to size in Cong?

Diggy cut down to size in Cong?

Confusion prevailed over fate of Congress general secretary Digvijay Singh, who had recently courted many controversies, with speculation being rife in the party circles on Tuesday that he has been divested of the charge of Uttar Pradesh and Assam.

The rumours got strength when another general secretary BK Hariprasad accompanied party MPs from Uttar Pradesh for their meeting with Congress president Sonia Gandhi about Presidential elections. Generally States AICC incharge had accompanied party MPs from a particular State for their meeting with Sonia during which brief discussion was held about the Presidential polls on July 19.

Adding fuel to the fire was when a Congress leader conceded that Singh has been temporarily divested of his duty as incharge of two States due to personal reasons as he has to visit abroad regularly for medical treatment of his wife.

However, Hariprasad denied having been given additional responsibility of the two States pointing out that no formal communication has been issued. Explaining that he had in the past even accompanied UPA Presidential nominee Pranab Mukherjee to UP and Assam for campaigning as Digvijay was abroad then.

Regarding his accompanying the UP MPs for meeting with Sonia, Hariprasad said that the confusion was created by a CPP staff by putting his name as the AICC incharge of UP while sending circulars. Sources also said that Hariprasad, who is inchrage of Madhya Pradesh, Chhatisgarh and Haryana, has been informally asked by the party to look after the affairs of UP and Assam also in Digvijay's absence.

But Congress general secretary incharge of media Janardan Dwivedi also denied that Digvijay has been removed as UP incharge terming such reports as baseless rumours. He said that Digvijay is still incharge of the two States. Regarding Hariprasad accompanying the UP MPs, he said that Digvijay was not available at the time. Significantly, Digvijay was present at the AICC headquarters in the evening. But he is likely to go abroad again in near future. Singh himself has also clarified that he has not been divested of the charge.

Earlier, Digvijay had offered to quit after dismal performance of the Congress in Uttar Pradesh Assembly polls. He had courted controversies by terming Trinamool Congress president Mamata Banerjee as "immature and erratic" when she had proposed three separate names for Presidential elections. Recently, he had even given controversial statements saying that party general secretary Rahul Gandhi should take more pro-active and larger responsibility in the Congress and even gave the timeline of September which has reportedly not gone down well with party leadership.
