India pitches for BrahMos induction in Russia fleet

India on Tuesday asked Russia to start inducting the 290-km range BrahMos supersonic cruise missiles in its naval fleet to further strengthen the joint venture between the two countries. For its part, Russia offered to jointly upgrade its global navigation system with India.

The two sides had formed the joint venture to produce the supersonic cruise missiles BrahMos in 1998 and since then, all three wings of the Indian armed forces have ordered BrahMos for their inventory but the Russian side is yet to do so. In India, the Navy and the Army have already inducted the BrahMos missiles and work is on to develop an air-launched version of the missile to be equipped on the SU-30MKI aircraft.

Head of the Joint Venture A Sivathanu Pillai urged the visiting Russian Deputy Prime Minister Dmitry Rogozin to ensure induction of the missile in Russian Navy, officials said here.

Seeking to step up cooperation in the space sector, Rogozin, who also met External Affairs Minister SM Krishna, said: "We have offered our Indian counterparts not only use of the Glonass system but also participation in upgrading it. We practically see it as a joint effort. I think our Indian counterparts will be interested in it."

Russia had launched the Global Navigation Satellite System (GLONASS) in 1993 which is seen as a counter to the popular Global Positioning System of the US military.
