CBI summons arms dealer’s aide to record statement
The CBI has summoned arms lobbyist Abhishek Verma’s estranged associate C Edmond Allen to record his statement in connection with his allegation that the former allegedly took a bribe of USD 5,30,000 from Swiss defence firm Rheinmetall Air Defence AG for getting it removed from the list of blacklisted firms.
CBI sources said the agency has communicated to Allen to provide his statement but it is yet to hear from him. The agency has also sent at least five reminders to Allen on whose complaint the agency has booked Verma and his Romanian wife Ancia Neascu.
The sources said Allen’s statement would help substantiate his allegations against Verma and his wife. His statement would also help in registration of more cases against Verma against whom the US attorney had leveled a number of allegations and provided documents to the CBI.
Documents provided by Allen to CBI suggest Verma’s role in a number of deals. The agency wants to know how Allen got possession of these papers. The CBI is also trying to ascertain the kind of relations he had with Verma.
The latest case against Verma and his wife relates to USD 530,000 that Verma allegedly took from the Swiss firm on the promise that he would use his influence to stall blacklisting proceedings initiated by the government against it after the Ordnance Factory Board scam had surfaced.
US-based attorney Allen, who has majority stake in Ganton USA and Ganton India, had approached the CBI Director and other top officials alleging Verma received funds from Rheinmetall for bailing it out.
