Admitting that the penalty of `10,000 for polluting water bodies was not adequate, the Environment Ministry on Tuesday told a Parliamentary committee that it seeks to steeply hike the fine to deter offenders. Environment Secretary T Chatterjee appeared before the Public Accounts Committee (PAC) on the issue of water pollution and said the Ministry was working on a proposal to steeply hike the penalty which could be several times higher than the Rs 10,000 prescribed in the Water (Prevention and Control of Pollution) Act, 1974, sources said.
