    Mamata decision disappoints BJP

Trinamool Congress chief Mamata Banerjee’s U-turn in announcing support to Pranab Mukherjee’s presidential bid has ‘disappointed’ the BJP, which was eyeing her support to drive a wedge in the ruling UPA.

Smarting under Mamata’s blow, the BJP quickly taunted her for supporting Mukherjee who, as the Finance Minister of the UPA Government, was equally responsible for the plight of the common man.

BJP spokesperson Nirmala Sitharaman reminded the Trinamool boss that she was always ahead of others in the UPA in raising voice against the anti-people policies of corrupt UPA alliance - be it price rise, FDI in retail, National Counter Terrorism Centre or others.

“We do not understand under what compulsion Mamata Banerjee has supported Pranab Mukherjee. We are disappointed with her decision. Was all this just posturing when Mamata spoke against the uncaring and insensitive policies of the UPA Government and has now taken a U-turn? Is she now indifferent to the cause of the common people?” Sitharaman asked the Trinamool boss.

After keeping its card close to its chest for weeks, the TMC on Tuesday announced that it will vote for Mukherjee. The decision ended the suspense over its stand and also dashed the hopes of Opposition-backed candidate PA Sangma of getting TMC support. Sangma had recently met Banerjee sometime back to seek her party’s support but had got no assurance from her.
