    Cong welcomes Didi decision

    Cong welcomes Didi decision

The Congress heaved a sigh of relief on Tuesday when Trinamool Congress president Mamata Banerjee extended support to UPA presidential nominee Pranab Mukherjee. The party hopes to get similar support for UPA Vice-Presidential nominee Hamid Ansari.

While Congress leaders welcomed the decision, Pranab telephoned Mamata to thank her for the support while Ansari made a call seeking it.

“Congress has always maintained that Mamataji is our valuable ally. We hope and trust that will continue to get her support and cooperation in future also such for election of Vice-President,” Congress General Secretary Janardan Dwivedi said.

Expressing gratitude to the alliance partner, AICC General Secretary in-charge of West Bengal Shakeel Ahmad said that the decision is as per his expectations. Mamata had never spoken against Pranab once his candidature was announced and he had also termed her his younger sister, Shakeel pointed out.

West Bengal Pradesh Congress president, Pradeep Bhattacharya, termed it as the beginning of a new era in the relations between the two parties and hoped that the bonhomie will continue in future also.

However, on Mamata’s demand for a moratorium on interest or special package for WB, Shakeel that it was a separate issue about which the decision will be taken by the centre. He also clarified that the State unit will continue.

Congress sources feel that the popular sentiment for son of soil Pranab forced Mamata to take the decision in his favour. It feels that Mamata cannot ignore Ansari as West Bengal has 30 per cent minority population.
