Jolt to BJP in Karnataka: MLA HS Shetty resigns

Jolt to BJP in Karnataka: MLA HS Shetty resigns

Giving a jolt to ruling BJP Government in Karnataka headed by its new Chief Minister, Jagadish Shivappa Shettarl, a senior party MLA Haladi Srinivasa Shetty from coastal Karnataka resigned on Tuesday over denial of ministerial birth to him from the Assembly. Srinivasa Shetty with a strong RSS background was an MLA from Kundapur in Udupi district met speaker KG Bopaiah and submitted his resignation. The speaker has accepted his resignation.

Chief Minister Shettar who is away in Delhi had deputed Law Minister S Suresh Kumar to deal with Shetty and convince him to withdraw his resignation but, Suresh Kumar has failed to convince him who has in dictated that he might join JDS in the new political alignment in the State.

A three-time MLA from Kundapur, Shetty has been disappointed with not getting a ministerial birth which was promised to him by the leaders.

He said, “The Speaker has accepted my resignation. I did not resign in haste. Even in future I will not take any hasty decision.”

He said he was resigning from the seat because both he and his voters “have been insulted” as he was called to Bangalore from Kundapura to take oath but was dropped at the last minute.

His name was doing the rounds for Cabinet berth, even an hour before the 34-member Shettar Ministry, including the Chief Minister, was sworn-in on July 12. But in a surprise, Kota Srinivasa Poojari, hailing from the coastal region and a member of the legislative council, was inducted into the ministry. However, he had said that Janata Dal-Secular State president and former Chief Minister HD Kumaraswamy was in touch with him, apparently urging him to join the party.

In fact, BJP’s strength in the 225-member Assembly has come down to 119 from 120 in the 225 member house. Meanwhile, another MLA Belur Gopalakrishna who has formed a group of dissidents along with one of the Bellary brothers Gali Karunakara Reddy has met JDS chief HD Kumaraswamy and corridor of power is abuzz with news about Kumaraswamy engineering one more coup with the growing dissidence in BJP.

Gopalakrishna demanded dropping of tainted Ministers from the Cabinet. He said, “The Governor himself has said he was against inducting tainted legislators into the ministry. Still they have been taken in. They should be asked to quit and legislators who have worked for the party for a long time should be inducted.”
