Pranab to visit Mahatma before taking oath today
Pranab Mukherjee will be sworn in as the 13th President by Chief Justice of India SH Kapadia on Wednesday at Central Hall, Parliament at 11.30 am in the presence of Prime Minister Manmohan Singh, Lok Sabha Speaker Meira Kumar, UPA Chairperson Sonia Gandhi, senior BJP leaders and many other dignitaries.
The new President and Supreme Commander of the Armed Forces will visit Rajghat to pay homage to Mahatma Gandhi before taking oath. The ceremony will commence with the arrival of President Pratibha Patil and Mukherjee in a procession from Rashtrapati Bhavan to Parliament House accompanied by ceremonially dressed President’s Bodyguards riding their horses.
Lok Sabha Speaker, Chief Justice and Vice President Hamid Ansari will receive them at Parliament House and then escort them to the Central Hall. As soon as Mukherjee is sworn in, the new President will be given a 21-gun salute and he will address MPs and then leave for Rashtrapati Bhavan with Patil.
When he arrives at Rashtrapati Bhavan, Mukherjee will be given an inter-service guard of honour in the forecourt. After this ceremony, Mukherjee will escort Patil to her temporary accommodation at 2 Tughlak Lane.
It was learnt that 17 relatives and close aides of the incoming President may attend the swearing ceremony and the protocol wing was requested to provide for a wheel chair for one of the relatives.
Trinamool Congress supremo and West Bengal Chief Minister Mamata Banerjee, Bihar Chief Minister Nitish Kumar besides many chief ministers and governors will take part in the swearing in ceremony. Heads of diplomatic missions, top civil servants and Services chiefs will also be present during the ceremony.
Keeping in view the movement of VVIPs from Rashtrapati Bhavan to Parliament House via Vijay Chowk, all government offices around these two venues will remain closed till noon. These include South Block and North Block housing ministries of defence, external affairs, finance and home and traffic restrictions will be there for the duration of the ceremony.
