    Antony reviews overall security preparedness

    Defence Minister AK Antony on Tuesday reviewed the overall security scenario in the country and strategic neighbourhood including Pakistan, Afghanistan and China and operational preparedness of the armed forces to face any eventuality.

    The three Services chiefs including Admiral Nirmal Verma, Air Chief Marshal NAK Browne and General Bikram Singh briefed the Minister here about the situation along the borders, officials said. Defence Secretary Shashikant Sharma and National Security Adviser Shvishankar Menon alo took part in the 45-minute meeting.

    Stating this meeting is held every month, officials said Antony was also given an update on J&K and North-East. As regards Pakistan and China, the Minister was apprised of ground situation on the western, northern and eastern borders and steps taken to enhance military capabilities, they said.

    Maritime security with special focus on the strategically important Indian Ocean as more than 70 per cent of India’s business is carried through sea lanes in this region also figured in the discussion, they said.
