SC reserves verdict in LN MISHRA murder case
The Supreme Court on Tuesday reserved verdict on the plea by murder convicts of former Railway Minister LN Mishra on the question whether the protracted trial of 37 years to try them for the offence should be a ground to dismiss further proceedings and free them. Terming it an “extraordinary” case where the trial extended to 37 years with no imminent sign of conclusion, the accused belonging to the Anand Margi sect, argued that if trial was allowed to continue it would be an affront to their right to life and liberty. But the CBI, defending the case, opposed this request on the ground that the crime committed by the accused should be taken to its logical conclusion. Moreover, the investigating agency said that the trial was nearing completion.
