Ghost of Gopalgarh haunts Gehlot
Chief Minister Ashok Gehlot has been forced to cancel his two visit of Ajmer in view of opposition by certain Muslim organisations which had branded him ‘Butcher of Muslims’ in the backdrop of the Gopalgarh incident in which 10 Meos were killed on September 14 last year.
As per his schedule, Gehlot was to visit Ajmer on Monday and Tuesday to attend several functions. Minister of State for IT and Communication Sachin Pilot was also to attend these functions, being Lok Sabha member from the area. Gehlot was scheduled to reach at Ajmer in the afternoon of Monday.
Posters appeared in the Dargah area of Ajmer on Sunday evening in which Gehlot was held responsible for Gopalgarh police firing, burning of Muslim police officer Phool Mohammed at Surewal in Swai Madhopur and anti Muslim riots in Sarda and Sarwada in southern Rajasthan.
The organisations mentioned on the posters said that they would held demonstrations and would show black flag to Gehlot when he comes to the city. Though it was officially stated that Gehlot cancelled his visit because he was not keeping well, sources said he did so after getting intelligence reports that he would face protests by Muslims.
A Government spokesman said late on Monday night that Gehlot would go to Ajmer on Tuesday to attend a function to release a postal stamp of Kaptan Durga Prasad Chaudhary, founder of Dainik Navjyoti, the oldest Hindi daily of the State, to mark the platinum jubilee of the paper. His programme was cancelled at the last moment. However, Pilot would attend the programme as per schedule.
The general feeling among the Muslim community in the State is that the CBI probe in the Gopalgarh and Surewal incident was not impartial as the Government administration was trying to save the officials who were responsible for these killings. “We are not satisfied at the way police and other officials were reinstated even before completion of probe by the CBI,” Salim Engineer, national secretary of Jamat-e-Ulema-i-Hind, said.
