Himachal Congress battleground shifts to Delhi, Virbhadra skips key meet
Congress infighting battleground has now shifted to Delhi as both HPCC chief Kaul Singh Thakur and former Union Minister Virbhadra Singh have called meets of supporters on Thursday before making separate representation to party president Sonia Gandhi.
Annoyed with party leadership for not issuing notification of his loyalist Gangu Ram Musafir as working president, Singh skipped crucial meet of manifesto committee chaired by his detractor Union Commerce Minister Anand Sharma on Wednesday evening.
The meeting was attended by Thakur, leader of opposition Vidya Stokes and committee member and Singh’s loyalist Musafir, where discussions were held on the issues and promises to be incorporated in manifesto to be released by party during polls.
The infighting drama looks far from ending in the party, as reluctant Congress leadership on Wednesday again didn’t issue any notification of working president in HPCC to mollify sulking former chief minister Virbhadra Singh, who has been pressing for his demand.
Singh supporters are claiming for last three days that Congress chief Sonia Gandhi had agreed for the appointment of working president for HPCC and it is only a matter of time that notification will be issued.
Singh has been demanding working president’s post for his loyalist in order to get greater say in ticket allocation.
Singh has called a meeting of his supporting 14 MLAs and other leaders at his house in Delhi on Thursday at 11am.
Similarly, Kaul Singh Thakur supporters at Mandi, Kullu and even some MLAs and party office bearers, got call from their leader, to rush to Delhi for a crucial meeting on Thursday.
Sources said that both the camps have demanded separate time for meeting with Congress president Sonia Gandhi. Most of the Congress leaders, including MLAs, are already in Delhi for meeting and to express solidarity with different camps.
Thakur camp has been opposing appointment of working president in PCC saying that it will undermine the position of state unit president and would send a wrong signal ahead of the assembly polls.
Singh had on the occasion of Eid met Nationalist Congress Party (NCP) leader Tariq Anwar and given rise to the speculations that he might join the UPA coalition partner, if the Congress leadership does not heed to his demands.
