Puri tense after temple panel member shot
Tension gripped the city following the murder of Guna Singhari alias Talachhu Bhagaban Mahapatra (46), a priest of Sri Jagannath Temple and a member of the temple management committee on Wednesday.
According to sources, while Singhari was standing in front of his house in Gudia Sahi at about 4 pm, all of a sudden a youth appeared on a bike and shot at him several rounds from very close range and sped away.
The bullets pierced through his head and chest.
Singhari was immediately rushed to the hospital where doctors declared him dead. Preliminary inquest revealed that Singhari received multiple bullets on his head and chest.
Police believe it was the fall-out of some property dispute and some outside sharp shooters were engaged to kill him. The dead body was sent for postmortem to the District Headquarters Hospital.
According to Superintendent of Police Anup Kumar Sahu, the Town police have registered a murder case and investigations are underway. A manhunt has been launched to nab the killers. To defuse the mounting tension, police presence has been beefed up in various parts of the town and all exit roads have been sealed. Vehicles are also being checked to nab the culprit, Sahu said.
