    BJP adamant on oust-PM demand

    BJP adamant on oust-PM demand

The BJP on Wednesday refused to budge from its demand for Prime Minister Manmohan Singh’s resignation over the Coalgate controversy and rejected the Government’s suggestion for a debate saying it has always been dishonoured its promises for action in corruption cases.

Leader of Opposition in Rajya Sabha Arun Jaitley said, “The only way to break the deadlock in Parliament is if the Prime Minister takes responsibility (for the coal scam) and acts accordingly.”

At BJP’s parliamentary party meeting on Wednesday morning, its chairman LK Advani said the Manmohan Singh Government has become a burden on the country and a blot on the nation. “That is why it is all the more important that this Government should go,” Advani told BJP MPs.

At the meeting, Jaitley dealt at length with the irregularities committed by the Singh Government in allotment of coal blocks while his Lok Sabha counterpart Sushma Swaraj briefed party MPs about the “political fallout” of the scandal.

There had been a difference of opinion between the BJP and the JD-U on stalling Parliament but the former prevailed over its Bihar ally to join the ‘quit-PM’ chorus. BJP feels that debate would give an easy escape route to the Congress from the present deadlock, which for the first time has embarrassed the PM personally.

To reject Government’s offer for a debate, the BJP flagged similar discussions on 2G scandal and CWG irregularities. It rued that no action was taken against the Sheila Dik**** Government in Delhi despite a PM-appointed committee holding it responsible for scandalous expenditure in games preparation.

Similar, it said, the CBI sat over the 2G investigations for 16 months and it moved only when the Supreme Court decided to monitor the progress in the case. “If they are so dishonest in honouring their promise for action, what is the use of a discussion? Here we have a CAG report which blows the lid off a scandalous allotment of coal block. The PM must resign, like A Raja did in the 2G scam and Dayanidhi Maran in the Aircel-Maxis deal controversy,” BJP spokesman Prakash Javadekar said.

The party charged there is a “method in the madness of Congress in defending the indefensible”. He said Congress always tries to first deny a scam, then delay the action against it, and finally attack the constitutional authority looking into it.

“Debate cannot be for delaying action against the guilty... Unfortunately for Congress, there is no escape route for Congress this time as the Prime Minister was the Coal Minister during 2006-09 when the 70 billion tons of coal reserves worth `51 lakh crore were allotted for free to 143 private companies,” Javadekar said.
