Chance meet kicks off guessing game

Chance meet kicks off guessing game

A ‘chance meeting’ between Trinamool Congress chief Mamata Banerjee and two senior BJP leaders on Tuesday created a flutter in the corridors of power and led to speculation about the principal Opposition’s effort to garner the support of UPA allies for its campaign against Prime Minister Manmohan Singh in the Coalgate controversy.

Mamata’s aides claimed the West Bengal Chief Minister came face to face with BJP’s Rajiv Pratap Rudy and Syed Shahnawaz Hussain onboard a flight from Kolkata to Delhi last night.

Others insist the two BJP leaders called on Banerjee at the MP’s flat on Baba Khadak Singh Marg, which she was allotted in the capacity of a Lok Sabha member.

“The two BJP leaders discussed some issues related to their constituencies. While Rudy wanted early completion of a rail factory at Chhapra, Hussain went with a demand for stoppage of some trains at Bhagalpur,” sources claimed.

Trinamool leaders though claim that the two BJP leaders briefed the West Bengal Chief Minister about PM’s role in the Coalgate controversy and the reasons behind their party’s insistence on Singh’s resignation. The Wednesday meeting of UPA’s coordination committee, the first such event in the last three years, was also briefly discussed.

Incidentally, BJP’s deputy leader in Rajya Sabha Ravi Shankar Prasad had also spoken to the Trinamool’s chief whip in Upper House Derek O’Brien to have ‘floor coordination’ when the matter was first raised in Parliament on Tuesday.

Though not a demanding ally, Mamata has given nightmares to Congress on several occasions. Her opposition to “anti-people” policies of UPA; like FDI in retail, NCTC, pension Bill, hike in prices of petroleum and others, have seen the Government roll back some of its proposals.
