Kiran forced to beg power from Centre

With the power crisis in Andhra Pradesh deepening further delivering a crippling blow to the industry and causing miseries to the domestic consumers, State Chief Minister N Kiran Kumar Reddy said that the Government was already spending Rs14 crore towards power purchase everyday.

Even as the protests by the opposition parties continued all over the State and the Telangana Rashtra Samiti laid a siege to the Ministers’ Quarters in Hyderabad leading to a clash with the police, the Chief Minister said that the crisis was worsened as the failure of monsoon brought the hydro-electricity general to a grinding halt in the State.

“Compared to last year, the power generation has declined by 48 million units and the consumption of power has increased by 10 per cent. There is a deficit of 29 million units of hydel power generation,” he said.

If there was no decline of 48 million units, we could have managed the situation well, he said appealing to the people to take every possible step to conserve power. He appealed to the consumers to use less of power consuming bulbs and prefer ceiling fans to the air conditioners.

He promised to maintain seven hour of electricity supply to the agriculture sector. The situation became worse after two units of 500 MW stopped generation power at Vijaywada Thermal power station and National Thermal Power Corporation plant at Ramagundam.

The Chief Minister said that power supply for the hoardings, bill boards and the malls will be restricted as part of the power consumption measures. He said the Government has requested the Centre to supply 500 MW additional power and as much power as possible for the nuclear power plants in Tamil Nadu.

In view of the growing gap between the demand and the supply the authorities have clamped three hours power cut in Hyderabad and other major cities and 12 hour power cut in the villages.

The industrial sector has been the worst hit as the industries have been forced to declare holidays of 15 days a month.

Angered over the worsening power crisis, Telangana Rashtra Samiti workers led by party MLA K Taraka Rama tried to barge in to the Ministers Quarters in Banjara Hills. However, the police pushed them back. They sealed the entry points of the Ministers’ Quarters with barbed wire.

“Let the State Government declare a power emergency in the State,” Taraka Rama Rao demanded.
