    BJP U-turn on casinos: Opp

    BJP U-turn on casinos: Opp

The BJP has made a U-turn on several assurances and has shown his soft corner for the mining and casino industries, Congress spokesperson and legislator from South Goa said. Lourenço said that Parrikar’s promises, announced with much fanfare, have not been acted on.

“So many casinos especially the onshore casinos of Goa which didn’t pay the increase in the licence fee are operating without any inhibition from the law enforcement agency headed by none other but Chief Minister Manohar Parrikar,” Lourenço said.

“The deadline for the payment of the licence fee which was earlier fixed to August 14 was later extended to August 17. Today was the fourth day after the deadline lapsed but the State’s home department was totally powerless on taking any action. All such casinos that have not paid the new licence fee are now illegal,” he added.

Parrikar had during the recently concluded Assembly session of the Goa Legislative Assembly said that he would raid casinos, both offshore and onshore, if they did not pay the licence fees due to the Government for the current financial year.

Parrikar once he took charge as Chief Minister raised the licence fees to operate a casino both for onshore as well as offshore casinos.

He also said that the BJP Government has gone soft on mining, which as Opposition party had accused of Rs25,000-crore scam in the State.
