Tribal elders in Pakistan’s restive North Waziristan region have expressed strong opposition to any military operation in the area and said they would seek refuge in Afghanistan if security forces launched an offensive.

Tribal elders convened a jirga or council in North Waziristan to express their strong opposition to any military operation and participants said any such move would worsen the situation, said journalists who covered the meeting.

The jirga held at Edak, a town located 20 km from Miranshah, the main town in North Waziristan, was attended by nearly 2,000 tribal elders. The participants reminded authorities that the tribesmen had struck a peace deal with the government in 2007 and that they still respected the accord.

The elders claimed the government had violated the peace deal by setting up check posts and unnecessarily searching people on key roads. They said they were against attacks on security forces and were ready to play a role to maintain peace in the region.
