Paper trail tangles case
The Soni Devi-Satyanand Jha ‘Batul’ fire refuses to die down, continuing to spark fresh controversy daily. Both claim victimhood and accuse each other of moral misdemeanour in public and personal life.
Soni, in a legal notice sent to the Agriculture Minister last year, had claimed to be his legal wife, saying they were married in 1996. More such legal moves and counter-moves mark the next chapter of the saga. The controversy generated by Soni has now boiled down to documents and papers which
various parties involved are throwing at each other.
However, both seem to be hiding vital parts of their alleged secret and conjugal relationship.
For instance, Soni was married to Bhupen Chaudhary in 1992. But The Pioneer has documents that reveal that Soni, even after her alleged marriage to Batul, continued to identify herself as Chaudhary’s wife in official documents.
In 2008, she had appeared for Madhyama examination conducted by the Hindi Sahitya Sammelan. In her admit card and examination form, she mentions Bhupen Chaudhary as her husband.
The same is true of her ration card. In 2004, she was appointed para-teacher through a
recommendation made by
village committee of Karzori village. The documents for this again mention Chaudhary as her husband.
At a Press conference in Ranchi a few days ago, Soni evaded replying to posers on why she kept her relationship a secret. Her lawyer Rajiv Kumar clarified that Soni and Chaudhary never lived together.
