Rain batters Mumbai; 47-yr-old electrocuted
Heavy rain battered the country’s commercial capital and its suburbs on Monday, claiming one life, inundating roads, railway tracks at many places and low-lying areas and, in the process, crippling normal life in the metropolis.
In an indication of the situation getting worse on Tuesday, the city-based Regional Meteorological Centre predicted in the evening that there would be “heavy to very heavy rainfall” in the metropolis and its suburbs during the next 24 hours.
So intense was the rainfall on Monday that between 8.30 am and 5.30 pm, the eastern suburbs registered 80.45 mm rains, while the western suburbs recorded 72.03 mm rainfall during the same period. However, Island city registered a relatively lower rainfall of 30.24 mm during the period.
On a day when waterlogging was reported from several of the roads and low-lying areas in the city, a 47-year-old man died of electrocution in Amritnagar locality at Ghatkopar (west) in north-east Mumbai. The person, identified as one Yadu Bajirao Gudekar, sustained burn wounds he accidentally touched a live wire. He succumbed to burns before he was rushed to a local hospital.
Suburban train services on both the main and habour lines of the Central Railway were affected, owing to water logging along the railway tracks at many places. As a consequence, the trains were delayed for periods ranging between 30 minutes to one hour. In comparison, the services on the Western Railway were less affected.
With many low-lying roads in the city coming under thick sheets of water, the road traffic was badly affected during the day.
Among the areas from where heavy water logging was reported were Lokmanya Nagar, Bhandup (west), LBS Marg, KBS Hegdewar Chowk, Mulund (west), Village road and police station area of Bhandup (west), Suja Hospital, Andheri (west), Sainath sub-way, Malad (west) and Akash Galli and Pawar Sahakar Mansion at Kurla (west).
A portion of public toilet block collapsed at Bandra’s Subhash Nagar locality. However, no one was injured in the mishap.
At least five tree falls were reported during the day from different parts of the city. However, no one was injured in any of the incidents.
