Court stays Lata’s move to sell Kolhapur studio

Renowned singer Lata Mangeshkar suffered a setback on Monday as a local court stayed her move to sell off her Kolhapur-based historic Jayaprabha film studios – spread over 11 acres — to a private builder.

Hearing a petition filed by the aggrieved Akhil Bharatiya Marathi Chitrapat Mahamandal (ABMCM), an apex film body, a Kolhapur civil court put on hold Mangeshkar’s plans to sell the Jayaprabha studio to one Raunak Popatlal Gundesha, a builder, for re-development, by issuing a “status quo” order on the property.

While ordering that no re-development be undertaken on the land occupied by the 88-year-old studio, Judge S N Jagtap asked Mangeshkar to file her say on the petition filed by the ABMCM, within next 15 days.

The development came less than a week after the members of ABMCM took out a morcha of artistes, film technicians, workers of the students, senior citizens, students and political activists in Kolhapur town against Mangeshwar, who is reportedly planning to sell the property to Gundesha for `11 crore.
