Mitra to meet PC for funds
Days after Prime Minister Dr Manmohan Singh said his Government was exploring ways to help the West Bengal Government financially in order to help it solve its financial crisis, State Finance Minister Amit Mitra said he is likely to meet Union Finance Minister P Chidambaram in a week’s time.
Mitra was quoted as saying on Monday that he was preparing to visit Delhi on September 5-6 to put the State Government’s demands before the Centre though the State was not too hopeful of any Central help coming its way.
“Our job is to make our case on the financial crisis that we are in and their job is to consider that. We have been urging them for a long time without much success. We don’t expect much out of this meeting but won’t hesitate to try,” a senior Finance Ministry official said.
The Prime Minister had on his way back from Teheran told media that his Government was trying to find a feasible solution to Bengal’s financial crisis. State Chief Minister Mamata Banerjee has made repeated claims before the Centre for a three-year moratorium on interest payment on the State’s accumulated debt of Rs2 lakh crore.
