Anti-influx clamour grows, Gogoi promises white paper

With the people holding rallies against illegal influx from Bangladesh and the Government’s failure to check the influx in various parts of Assam in the last few days, Assam Chief Minister Tarun Gogoi on Tuesday announced that his Government would publish a ‘white paper’ by October on measures taken by it in the last 10 years to solve the problem.

At least 10 public rallies were taken out by people of the State at various places in last few days to protest against the illegal influx as well as to protest against the Government failure to check influx.

“We have taken several measures to solve the vexed Bangla migrants’ problem. These are much more than steps taken by our rival political parties while they were in power. We have decided to publish a white paper on the steps taken for solving the ‘Bangla migrants’ problem where it will be crystal clear which political party has real intension to solve the problem”, said Gogoi while justifying the move of the Congress to check illegal migration from the neighbouring country.

Gogoi also blamed the opposition BJP and AGP ( Asom Gana Parisad) for politicizing the Bangla migrants’ problem and alleged that BJP led NDA-while it was in power did nothing for solution of the problem and AGP which was in power for ten years in the state did very little towards ending the problem.

He said that out of 224.69 km of land border in Assam sector of Indo- Bangla border, fencing was completed in 218.17 km and steps have also been taken for stopping infiltration through river routes in the border areas. Assam shares 272 km of land and river border with Bangladesh.

He also said that a director would be appointed for the Directorate of national Register Citizens to expedite the process of updating the NRC. The State government had earlier announced that NRC in 126 Assembly constituencies in the state would be completed within three years.

The Chief Minister also announced that to provide legal advice to the authority on issues relating to updating the NRC, Assam government would set up a committee under a former Judge of High Court. A formal request to Gauhati High Court would be made in this purpose.

The Government has accepted the modalities prepared by the cabinet sub-committee on updating the 1951 NRC on August 16 last and sent the proposed modalities to the central government for its final approval. Assam will start the NRC update process after receiving the green signal from Centre.

Asked about the recent violence in BTAD, the Chief Minister said that only movement alone would not solve the problem. “Some concrete steps need to be taken for solution of foreigners’ problem. We are taking it as a mission. We need support of all sections of people. I want everybody to join together in solving the problem”, he said.

He revealed that 2, 37,631 cases have been pending in state’s different Foreigners Tribunals. Govt. has decided to increase number of Foreigners’ Tribunals from present 36 to 39. Under the new guideline, a case in Foreigners Tribunal has to be solved within 60 days from date of registration.
