Govt, NDA reject BSP chief’s demand for special session
The Government and NDA both on Friday firmly rejected BSP leader Mayawati’s demand for calling a special session of Parliament to pass the Constitution Amendment Bill providing reservation in promotion for SC/ST employees.
Parliamentary Affairs Minister Pawan Kumar Bansal said that there was no possibility to extending the session when the Opposition did not allow the House to function during the just concluded Monsoon Session thereby halting the passage of the Bill.
“If all parties would have suggested that they are ready to resolve the deadlock, then we could have thought about it (extension or special session),” he said and added that no formal request was received and he has just seen media reports about it.
NDA convener Sharad Yadav also said no purpose would be served in extending the session or calling a special session without resolving the deadlock between the Government and Opposition on Coalgate, which brought Parliament to standstill.
But there is no possibility of deadlock being resolved as the BJP has set two preconditions — cancellation of coal blocks and fair probe — to allow a debate in Parliament.
Annoyed over the rejection of her demand, Mayawati termed the Congress-led UPA Government as “anti-dalit” and holding it responsible for deferring the Bill for another 2 to 3 months.
“We have requested the Centre to call a special session of Parliament this month to get this Bill cleared but before that the Government should ensure that the House will function smoothly. Find a middle path on this coal scam so that there is peaceful atmosphere in the House and we are able to get the Bill cleared. We had talked about this to the Centre also but they have not accepted our request,” Mayawati lamented.
