Govt withdraws cases against Tappal farmers
The Uttar Pradesh Government on Friday withdrew cases against 37 farmers for staging protest against land acquisition at Tappal village in Aligarh during Mayawati regime.
An official spokesman that the cases against the farmers, majority of whom are lodged in jail, had been withdrawn following announcement of Chief Minister Akhilesh Yadav in this regard. Yadav had announced during inauguration of the Yamuna Expressway project last month that cases against innocent farmers would be withdrawn. “The State Government has complied with the order of the Chief Minister and withdrawn cases against 37 farmers,” the spokesman said in a statement. The Government had earlier withdrawn criminal cases against 24 farmers, in April this year. Farmers of Tappal village were up in arms against the then Mayawati Government in 2010 over acquisition of their land for construction of the Yamuna Expressway. They were demanding compensation at par with that given to Noida farmers. During that protest, police had registered cases against the farmers and put them behind bars.
