    Modi’s hi-tech war on gutkha

    Modi’s hi-tech war on gutkha

Tech-savvy Gujarat Chief Minister Narendra Modi is now set to use modern technology to get the people to give up their age-old habit of chewing gutkha, the carcinogenic concoction of tobacco and pan masala.

A missed call from a mobile phone is all that is required to register one’s support to Modi’s brain-child of banning gutkha from Gujarat, announced by the Chief Minister during his Independence Day speech at Junagadh.

The missed call to the number 8000980009 would immediately generate an SMS from the service provider acknowledging the caller’s attempt.

“Thanks for registering to remain connected to me. Let’s join hands to make Gujarat gutkha free — Narendra Modi,” says the SMS in response to the missed call. The number to which the missed call should be made is being publicised throughout the State by different media, including flashing it on the local television channels during news and other programmes also.

The ban on gutkha comes into effect from September 11, the day Swami Vivekananda delivered his historic speech at the World Parliament of Religions in Chicago many years ago in 1893.

Modi had endorsed modern technology last week too when he interacted live with several lakh people all over the world through the social media window Google+ Hangout. He has also used his blog to seek the people’s cooperation to eradicate the menace of gutkha which has wrecked many families in the State.

Realising that public admonishment doesn’t work towards de-addiction, Modi has appealed to family members to try innovative ways to divert people’s attention away from gutkha.

If a family member is craving to consume gutkha, you can ask him to come for a walk or hear some nice music or even have a cup of tea together, Modi suggested in his blog on Friday.

“Show them photographs of patients who fell prey to cancer by consuming gutkha and I am sure once they look at the disturbing images, they will rethink their action! Your love, affection and care can go a long way,” Modi said.
