ISRO espionage case: HC orders compensation to scientist
The Kerala High Court on Friday upheld the order of the National Human Rights Commission (NHRC) awarding Rs 10 lakh as compensation to former ISRO scientist Nambi Narayanan, who was charged in the sensational ISRO espionage case of 1994.
While dismissing a petition filed by the Kerala Government challenging the commission’s order, a division bench of the court comprising Justices CN Ramachandran Nair and CK Abdul Rahim directed it to hand over the compensation money within three weeks to Nambi Narayanan, who responded to the verdict saying he had trust in the justice system. Nambi Narayanan was in charge of the ISRO’s overall Cyrogenic project. The ISRO espionage case of 1994 which became sensational with all aspects that made a movie spicy and thrilling was first investigated by Kerala Police and later handed over to CBI, which concluded that that no espionage had taken place.
The Supreme Court had in 1998 found that the charge of espionage was false and had ordered release of all the accused: ISRO scientists Nambi Narayanan and D Sasikumaran, businessmen SK Sharma and Chandra Sekharan, former IGP Ramon Srivastava and Maldivian women Mariam Rasheeda and Fouzia Hassan.
