Swamy to PM: Order CBI probe against PC
Janata Party chief Subramanian Swamy has urged Prime Minister Manmohan Singh to order CBI probe in “perjury, forgery and fraud” committed by Finance Minister P Chidambaram.
Reacting to The Pioneer reports on discrepancies in various affidavits filed by Chidambaram on his wife Nalini’s assets, Swamy said that the “irregularities” committed by Chidambaram attracted prosecutable provisions under IPC and Prevention of Corruption Act.
“Serious discrepancies have been pointed out between what has been filed by Chidambaram presently Finance Minister, with you in his capacity as a Minister, and on an affidavit as a candidate to the Lok Sabha elections of 2009. At present I have not been able to look into his affidavits filed by him with you in 2004, during your first term as Prime Minister, and an affidavit with the Returning Officer during 2004 elections. However, with your command of the various investigating agencies of the Government you can get it examined,” said Swamy in his letter to the PM on Monday.
Swamy said it was a matter of national shame that a person, who is Finance Minister and in-charge of the national treasury, should so blatantly engage in fudging records to enable himself and his family gather wealth by depriving land that belonged to the poor fishermen of Tamil Nadu.
“Moreover, the discrepancy in the assets and liabilities filed with you compared to what he filed on oath as a candidate for the Lok Sabha are prosecutable under IPC and PC Act. Hence I urge you to direct the CBI to investigate this matter as early as possible. I hope you will appreciate that it is your statutory duty to do so, and I as a citizen and a public person, urge you to perform your statutory duty at the earliest,” added Swamy.
