Jaitley scotches speculation on NDA's choice for PM post
Senior BJP leader Arun Jaitley on Monday sought to put to rest all speculation about NDA’s prime ministerial candidate for 2014 election saying his party will take that decision in consultation with its allies at the time of election. Jaitley remarks came a day after Shiv Sena chief Bal Thackeray’s statement that Sushma Swaraj was the only “deserving” BJP leader for that post.
“I think the allies express their opinion and they have a right to express their opinion. Frankly when we decide along with our allies at the time of the next election, we factor in every factor therein,” Jaitley told Karan Thapar on CNN-IBN.
Jaitley’s remarks are in line with BJP chief Nitin Gadkari’s last month’s statement that the BJP will consult all its allies before taking a call on this issue. The party has not even announced whether it would go into the election projecting some one as its leader.
Asked who in BJP could become the next Prime Minister, Thackeray had in an interview to Sena mouthpiece Saamana said, “At present there is only one person who is intelligent, brilliant — Sushma Swaraj...She would be a great choice for PM’s post. She is a deserving, intelligent woman. She would deliver a great performance.”
The BJP also said the alliance was “fully united” to replace UPA in next elections and will together take a call on matters like their Prime Ministerial candidate.
“NDA is fully united and we will form the government after the next general elections. We, as well as the people, have no doubt about that we will come to power. Since we are going to form the next Government, we are often the topic of discussions these days,” Hussain said.
Asked about NDA’s prime ministerial candidate, he gave the cliched reply of the coalition taking “the appropriate decision at the appropriate time”. He said, “When the elections come, the time for choosing the prime ministerial candidate will also come. Let the polls be held and then we will answer it.”
Probed further about each NDA partner naming a different PM candidate or expressing reservations over some, Hussain maintained that everybody has a right to voice his opinion.
