    TDP set to back Telangana

    TDP set to back Telangana

Even as the Central Government and the Congress high command continue to pursue the policy of deliberate dilly-dallying on Telangana issue, the political landscape of Andhra Pradesh is all set to undergo a radical change. This time it is likely to be caused not by Telangana Rashtra Samiti, but by the Telugu Desam supremo, N Chandrababu Naidu.

After much procrastination, which has cost the party heavily in terms of electoral popularity, Naidu has made up his mind in favour of a separate Telangana State. Senior party leader from Telangana region E Dayakar Rao has said that the party will announce its stand before September 17. The party intends to organise a big show of strength on the day, which it will celebrate as the Telangana Liberation Day, marking the day of merger of Hyderabad State in to Indian Union through police action.

Dayakar Rao said that Naidu has already had lengthy discussions with the party leaders from Andhra and Rayalaseema regions and explained to them the compulsions of taking a decision in favour of Telangana. He also said that the TDP president will write a fresh letter to the Union Government to immediately initiate the steps for formation of Telangana State in the next few days.

However, party sources said that the TDP leaders from the non-Telangana regions were still not happy with the change of heart on part of Naidu.

Sources said that Naidu made a strong case in support of Telangana saying that if the TDP announces its support, the ball will be in the court of the Congress party. It will also force the YSR Congress to take a clear stand. It will also build pressure on Telangana Rashtra Samiti and its leader K Chandrashekhar Rao who, many Telangana supporters allege, was still hobnobbing with the Congress party

Naidu said that the present uncertain situation was hurting the party badly. He pointed out that the party could not win a single by-election and lost many of its seats to others. He also drew attention of his colleagues from Andhra and Rayalseema that many important party leaders from Telangana region quit the party because of the unclear stand.

He also told them that if uncertainty ends, he will be able to concentrate on rebuilding and strengthening the party in both Telangana as well as Andhra-Rayalseema regions.

The Telangana issue has come to fore in TDP at a time when Naidu was also planning to under take a 2,400-km long walk across the State in two phases to strengthen the party and re-establish his rapport with the people.

Meanwhile, TRS president Chandrashekhar Rao's claim that the Centre was going to announce the decision on Telangana before September 30 suffered a major blow with the Union Home Minister, Sushil Kumar Shinde, making it clear that the Centre had never given any such signal to anybody. He told media in New Delhi that he was still in consultation with the leaders from Telangana and Andhra-Rayalseema regions. When his attention was drawn to the statement of KCR that he had received positive signals from the Central Government, Shinde said, "What else can he say? He has been saying the same thing for a long time."
