Assam on alert afterinfo on Ulfa strikes
The anti-talks faction of the United Liberation Front of Asom led by Paresh Baruah may carry out subversive activities in the State, targeting police and security forces, Assam DGP Jayanta Narayan Choudhury said on Monday.
There are specific Intelligence inputs that the outfit is planning to carry out subversive activities in some of the major towns across the State primarily in the form of attacks on security forces, Choudhury said.
The developments assume significance as suspected militants had lobbed a grenade in the crowded Paltan Bazar area of the city killing one CRPF personnel and injuring 12 others last Saturday. The injured included three CRPF personnel.
On Thursday, suspected Ulfa cadres had triggered an IED explosion on Tinsukia district injuring 12 persons including three policemen.
Police said that, while in both the cases in Guwahati and Tinsukia the militants had targeted the security forces, police had also recovered five grenades and five detonators being transported to Guwahati for carrying out subversive activities on Sunday evening. The explosives were recovered from an auto van at Rangiya in Kamrup district.
The DGP also said that the outfit is looking for help from other militant outfits who are active in the State to carry out the activities on behalf of Ulfa.
“Paresh Baruah is strong enough as far as weapons and ammunition are concerned. He has lots of weapons but lacks reliable manpower to execute his designs,” said the DGP, while adding that this has forced the outfit to look for help from other outfits.
“The anti-talks faction of Ulfa has close ties with many outfits operating in the region including some Muslim groups. They might use these outfits or other youth to carry out their activities,” said the DGP while adding that the outfit also wants to make its presence felt.
Assam police have, however, intensified security arrangements across the State following the Intelligence reports.
Meanwhile, police and CRPF in a joint operation on Monday claimed to have killed a hardcore Ulfa militant from a remote location in Goalpara district in Assam-Meghalaya border on Monday. Police claimed that the slain cadre as one Mahar Rabha alias Rohit Rabha. However, in an e-mail statement sent to media, the outfit said that Rabha was not involved with the Ulfa.
