Gali shelled out Rs 10 crore for day’s use of jail phone
In a new twist to the Bellary brothers story, latest investigations both by the Central Bureau of Investigation and the Anti-Corruption Bureau of Andhra Pradesh have revealed that former Karnataka Minister Gali Janardhana Reddy bribed officials of Chanchalguda Jail in Hyderabad to the tune of Rs 10 crore for getting unhindered access to phone facility just for a day.
More details of the corruption in Chanchalguda Jail, when Gali was lodged there, were coming out as a high-level investigation was launched after the then jail superintendent Keshav Naidu and his deputy were transferred out following allegations of nexus between VIP inmates and the jail officials.
Details of how Janardhana Reddy was given access to phone on the very first day in jail and how he used to issue directions to his people to shift cash and gold bars worth Rs 1,000 crore have also come out. Sources said that Gali Somashekhara Reddy, a member of Karnataka Assembly and the brother of Janardhana Reddy revealed the instructions of his elder brother during questioning by the ACB.
Sources said the cash and gold were kept in gunny bags and Gali directed his henchmen to shift them to some other secret locations. Sources said that the bribe money was paid not only to jail officials but many other influential people.
Somashekhara Reddy also revealed that Gali used to give instructions to him and others during their meetings in the jail.
Earlier, investigations revealed that Janardhana Reddy enjoyed many other facilities and was able to meet his visitors sans any restrictions. The visitors, including MLAs and one MP from Karnataka, used to get entry into jail instantly, whenever they came to meet him.
Janardhana Reddy, who was arrested by the CBI on September 3 last year, has already completed one year in jail. He was lodged in Chanchalguda Jail till the month of May when he succeeded in bribing CBI court judge Patthabi Rama Rao to the tune of Rs 10 crore to secure bail. However, Gali remained in jail as he was shifted to Bangalore in connection to the case of illegal mining in Bellary.
