Flood alert in Valley, 2 dead

Flood alert in Valley, 2 dead

Two persons died in Kashmir Valley as incessant rains lashed mountains and plains equally raising water levels in river Jhelum and other rivulets in the countryside. Authorities have sounded a flood alert, set up control rooms at provincial and district levels and asked locals to move to safer areas.

The downpour started on Saturday night and continued in many areas without a break until Monday afternoon. Temperatures have gone down by several notches forcing locals and tourists to put on woollens.

A police spokesman said that a vehicle skidded off while negotiating Zoji La Pass on Srinagar-Leh National Highway. Muhammad Ismail died in the accident while five others were wounded. Another civilian drowned in a mountain stream at Boniyar pocket near Uri in north Kashmir close to Line of Control. Sources said the deceased was washed away by strong currents.

In Kupwara, a child was injured when an electricity pole fell down following heavy rains in the area. Power supply was snapped in several far-flung areas after damages to the supply lines.

On Sunday, security forces and local civilians rescued 33 persons caught in flash floods in the hill district of Shopian in south Kashmir. A defence spokesman said that the Army received an alert from the civil administration that 33 nomads along with their children and more than a hundred cattle were stranded by Vaishu Nullah. They were immediately rescued.
