Jethmalani’s wish
Senior advocate Ram Jethmalani has his likes and dislikes pretty well determined. Last week, during the hearing of the Sohrabuddin fake encounter killing case in Supreme Court, he disclosed his affinity for Mumbai trial courts. Having started his career as a lawyer from Maharashtra, he has a soft corner for the State. As the Court had to determine which place to shift the Sohrabuddin trial from Gujarat, Jethmalani asked the bench, “I hope you will shift the trial to Maharashtra. I will have the pleasure to conduct a trial after many years.” Justice Aftab Alam, by now aware of Jethmalani’s likes, teased him, “In that case I will transfer the case to Patna,” evoking an unequivocal response from the seasoned lawyer, “Of all places, do not transfer it to Patna.”
