Kochi coastal radar station to open on Sep 15

Defence Minister AK Antony on Saturday will inaugurate a coastal radar station in Kochi, Kerala, the first such station in south India. He had already inaugurated two radar stations for coastal security, set up in the wake of Mumbai terror attacks in Maharashtra and Gujarat respectively on August 25.

The coastal security network was first recommended by the Group of Ministers set up to review overall security in the aftermath of the Kargil war in 1999. The project worth over over Rs 601.75 crore was fast tracked after the Mumbai attacks and the Government is hopeful of setting up 46 radar stations to provide real time surveillance cover up to 25 nautical miles around the coastline.

The coastal stations under phase one are scheduled to be completed by September end where in 36 stations in mainland including west and east coast will be operational and remaining six in Lakshadweep and Minicoy Islands and four in Andaman and Nicobar Islands will be functional by March next year. The Coast Guard will man these stations.
