One year on, UGC yet to select chairman
Yet another round of controversy is likely to surface with the HRD Ministry not being able to select a candidate from the nominations received so far for the post of Chairman of the University Grants Commission lying vacant for over a year. After a year round of selection, the Ministry is to extend the nomination period of candidates for another one month.
In view of enough ‘politics’ involved in the selection of a Chairperson, the HRD Ministry is to call for further nominations till mid October 2012. A top HRD Ministry official said that the search-cum-selection panel, at the instance of the Government, is now doing an extended search seeking more names of suitable candidates.
A panel constituted by the Government is seeking nominations for selection of a new Chairperson who can “energetically and imaginatively” steer the higher education sector along the path of competitive excellence for promoting access, equity and quality towards inclusive development.
The appointment process for the Chairman and Vice-Chairman’s posts is already under litigation challenging the selection process. UGC Chairman’s post has been vacant for more than a year and Vice-Chairman Ved Prakash is acting as Chairman. The search-cum-selection committee had shortlisted Pankaj Chandra, Director IIM-Bangalore and Seyed Hasnain, former Vice-Chancellor of Hyderabad University earlier but that got mired in controversy.
