Another CPM committee in Kerala splits
Deepening the crisis in Kerala CPI-M, the Mundur area committee of the party in Palakkad district split on Tuesday with a major section rebelling against the official leadership's right wing deviations announcing the formation of a parallel area committee with PA Gokuldas, their leader, as secretary.
The split, which is yet to be formalized with formation of different panels under the new area committee, was the result of a protracted revolt of the supporters of octogenarian central committee member VS Achuthanandan against the district committee which was allegedly enforcing the will of the official State leadership headed by secretary Pinarayi Vijayan.
Observers feel that the new split could have serious impact on the political strength of the Kerala CPI-M, which has been on the decline since the rebels in Onchiyam in Kozhikode district formed the Revolutionary Marxist Party in 2008 and those in Shoranur, Palakkad floated the People's Development Front in the same year.
The rebellion and the subsequent formation of RMP had eroded the mass base of the CPI-M in Onchiyam and this is perceived as the reason behind the brutal murder of rebel leader TP Chandrasekharan on May 4. A minimum of a dozen prominent leaders of the CPI-M have been named as accused in the case relating to that murder.
The formation of the parallel area committee in Mundur was announced at a convention of VS-supporters on Tuesday in protest against the demotion of area secretary Gokuldas. He, however, said that the move was not against the party's central or state leadership but against an unholy group in the Palakkad district committee but sources said this explanation as only technical.
